High Socks

High socks were once only for sports players and school kids. Now they are an accessible and inexpensive fashion statement sported in all colors, fabrics and designs.
You need a certain amount of cool to be able to get away with high socks, and let’s face it, to be in a certain age group. Anyone over thirty probably, sadly, needs to put their high socks away to avoid looking like a costume party attendee or a high school science teacher.
For those with the chutzpah, and the legs, to pull them off, high socks are best worn loudly!
High socks team well with short skirts and short shorts. At all costs, avoid wearing skirts or shorts that meet the top of the sock. They only look good if there is a minimum of three inches of leg showing between the two garments. If you are tempted to wear longer shorts with high socks (especially at the beginning of summer when our legs are blinking their way back into public display), remember that science teacher – the one in the khaki shorts, knee-high socks and probably sandals.
Leave the school uniforms to the school-girls. The school uniform look is cute at a costume party, but a little creepy on the street. Go for miniskirts in tartan, denim, or outrageous colors. Alternatively, black thigh-high socks with long boots and a tunic top can bring a touch of class to the high sock, bringing it out of it’s Fun-and-Funky genre and into something a little more grownup.
High socks can work as evening-wear, especially in metallic thread. Team gold knee-highs with a black cocktail dress if you have some chunky vintage shoes to give your legs extra personality.
One hidden benefit to high socks: They hold your credit card nicely. If you can farm out your lipstick and phone to someone else, you won’t have to take a handbag with you ever again.
