White Socks

Do you wear white socks? Does your girlfriend or wife berate you for it?
We’ve all been there. White socks have always been a bit of a controversial item of clothing when it comes to looking cool or ‘hip’. Perhaps saying ‘hip’ isn’t the best way to shrug off your uncool image however it is generally assumed that white socks aren’t going to do you any favors either. A throwback to the dreadful fashion of the 80’s some say. Maybe, but are they making a comeback?
In Merthyr Tydfil they are. The Welsh town is seeing a renaissance of sorts as their local Asda branch is shipping some 200 pairs a day. Is it that the inhabitants are just fashion outcasts? Far from it. It seems as though they, white socks, are becoming somewhat of a styling key when it comes to sportswear.

Wearing white socks when playing Tennis for example is obviously not frowned upon but these days they seem to fit well with general sports related clothing. So possibly there is a place where white socks can be incorporated into conventional fashion.
However don’t expect them to be propelled back into the mainstream anytime soon. The general fashion rule is that your socks should match the color of your suit and shoes; so unless business men start wearing cream colored or white suits to work then white socks will still be confined to the ‘uncool’ realm of smart wear for some time yet.
However wear them with some sports gear and you could very well be fitting in with the masses rather than making a statement of individuality that, far from being admired, will subject you to the fashion advice of every person within you earshot. The only hard part is convincing your better half to let you keep them on.
