Of all the members of the sock family, ankle socks are probably the most versatile. They are unisex, can be worn at work and at play, come in every style from athletic to sexy and most importantly, they make your legs look great!
The beauty of ankle socks is that they leave your leg bare right down to the level of the shoe. This means that the heat-retaining properties of socks are diminished when you are running around the squash court. Cool.
It also means that the unflattering look of crew socks is eliminated. Crew socks tend to cut off at the widest part of the calf, giving the legs an uneven and much bigger look. Ankle socks peep discreetly over the top of your shoe, leaving the line of your leg unbroken.
The ankle sock has many faces. While most of us have a pair or two in the sweatsock style, the sexy ankle sock is everywhere. Rockabillies first brought them to our attention as cute additions to the flared skirt and tight tops, and during the eighties no pair of brightly colored high heels was complete without a sexy little pair of light ankle socks, preferably with a frill.
The downside of ankle socks is that they need to be replaced more often than other styles. There is nothing more annoying on your morning run than feeling a slack ankle sock working its way past your ankle and under your foot. Still, with bulk packs of these babies working out to less than two dollars a pair, its not hard to find new ankle-height friends for your sock drawer.
